The History of Barabbas Ministries

In 2001 Barabbas Ministries was established to meet a need for formally incarcerated men and their families. While doing volunteer work inside the Bexar County Jail Executive Director Charley Mann discovered a startling fact. When a mentoring style of discipleship was applied (Matthew 28:18-20) men did not return to prison. The cycle of "in and out and back in" ended! The extreme failure rate of our prisons was reversed and this reversal was radical.

The initial eleven months of researches revealed if after evangelism discipleship was done the success rate was absolutely phenomenal! The more a mentoring style of discipleship was applied the greater the success. Nationally it was documented that Christ centered faith based outreaches were between 80% and 99% successful! And that the more the mentoring style was applied the more consistently the 99% figure was attained. Meanwhile the national prison systems' success rate average was 31% to 40%. Another astounding statistic was repeat offenders, more than 3 trips into prison, could be turned back into a productive life and restored to their families. We also found that Texas prisons were very receptive to faith based programs.

Then, after preliminary startup, we discovered a huge ministry need for the families as a whole. We instantly adjusted to evangelize and disciple them too. Moreover, after working inside the prisons we received confirmation through the correctional officers that the restoration of the family was another key to success. We should note that both the inside correctional officers and the outside parole officers have been extremely encouraging and helpful to the ministry.

What rose to the top of all the research were four key areas:
  • First and foremost was the Mentoring Style of Discipleship. Only Christ "in" someone would change them.
  • Second, was Christ centered teaching about Employment and Careers.
  • Third, was Christ centered treatment of Abuse and Addictions.
  • And forth, was Christ centered family discipleship.

Now after almost eleven years of operation God has shown us the importance of simple necessities. A great missionary once said "you can't witness to someone whose stomach is growling or has no roof over their heads." We have adjusted to meet these needs too. Currently we are providing many of the simple but necessary needs such as ID recovery, employment assistance, support with registering for medical & dental aids, food assistance, etc……………………..

However; God has made it very clear that Housing and Family one of the most required necessities. In 2013 we opened offices to better service the prison family on the east side of the inner city of San Antonio. From these offices we can minister directly to the whole family units. We've also begun the Barabbas Project Transitional Home & Family Center project. This will be a 16 man Transitional Home that will have complete facilities for housing men coming out on parole and for training the total family. It will include offices, Chapel, kitchen, classrooms, and other key living necessities.

The fact that the first and second areas statistically fight to be number one is a critical indicator. All of what we do in the way of Discipleship is practical and life skills orientated. This is not to say we don't emphasis the spiritual nature of what being "in Christ" truly means, because we do. But we also stress the application of the Gospel and our Salvation to our lives.
